Starting counseling can feel like a big step. You may be excited to begin, or you may feel nervous about opening up to someone new. Both feelings are normal. My goal is to make your first counseling session comfortable, clear, and helpful so that you can begin your journey with confidence.

Why People Come to Counseling

People seek counseling for many different reasons: stress, anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, grief, or simply wanting to grow personally. Whatever brings you in, you don’t have to “have it all figured out” before you start. The first step is simply showing up.

What Happens in the First Session

The first session is about getting to know you. We’ll spend time:

  • Talking about what brought you to counseling
  • Reviewing your goals, hopes, or challenges
  • Covering some basics about confidentiality and how counseling works
  • Answering any questions you have about the process
  • Get to work.  I try to make sure everyone leaves their first session with some sense of direction in whatever they are struggling with.

You don’t need to prepare a script or say everything perfectly. Think of it as a conversation — a safe place where you can begin sharing at your own pace.

Common Questions Clients Ask

  • How long will counseling take? — The first session lasts one hour but the length of the process depends on your goals. Some people come for a few sessions, while others continue for longer-term support.  All along the way, we’ll be having an open dialogue around your goals, whether or not they are being met, and how frequent or how much longer we should be meeting.
  • Will you tell me what to do? — My approach is collaborative. I’ll listen, offer insight, and help you find practical steps that fit your life.
  • What if I don’t know what to talk about? — That’s okay. We’ll start where you are, and the conversation will naturally unfold.

How to Prepare

You don’t need to bring anything special, but here are a few tips that can help:

  • Write down any questions or concerns you’d like to cover.
  • Think about what you most hope to gain from counseling.
  • Give yourself permission to be honest and open — this is your space.

In-Person and Online Options

At Pat Ward Counseling, I offer sessions in my Oxford, Mississippi office as well as secure online counseling for clients across the state of Mississippi. You can choose the setting that feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

Taking the First Step

Beginning counseling can feel uncertain, but you don’t have to take the journey alone. Your first session is the start of building a supportive relationship where you can explore your challenges and move toward growth and healing.  As it says on my fee page, if we decide at the end of our first session that we aren’t a good fit for each other, then there’s no charge and I’ll gladly help you find someone else who can help.
